Oxford Street is a major thoroughfare in London, England in the City of Westminster. With over 300 shops, it is Europe's busiest shopping street, as well as the most dense.
The area, ever popular with those visiting London to enjoy the nightlife, has many bars, clubs and restaurants nearby.
The road houses over 300 shops along its mile and a half span.
Stretching between Marble Arch and New Oxford Street the road intersects with other well known London roads including Park Lane, New Bond Street and Regent Street.
Oxford Street is served by one of the London Underground's major Tube Stations, Oxford Circus as well as Tottenham Court Road Tube, Bond Street Tube and Marble Arch Tube.
Oxford Street can be considered to form part of the districts of Fitzrovia, Soho and Mayfair.
One of the better known streets in London, Oxford Street, is located in the city of Westminster and is one of the centerpoints of the "West End".
The street derives its name in part from being a segment of the old London-Oxford Road which began at Newgate, City of London. Today the road forms part of the A40, although it is not signposted as this, like other roads in central London.
The original Oxford Street location dates back to the Roman times as do so many roads in the UK. The current name of Oxford Street was adopted in the 18th century as The Duke of Oxford had purchased much of the surrounding land.
It runs for approximately a mile and a half (two and a half kilometres) from Marble Arch at the north east corner of Hyde Park, through Oxford Circus to St Giles' Circus, at the intersection with Charing Cross Road and Tottenham Court Road.
